Are rugs necessary? And won’t I ruin it if I step on it? Those were questions I asked myself when I saw my first punch needle rug. I did a lot of research on material and the process and decided to try. I had already made wall hangings and pillows. And I wanted some rugs for my newly updated bathroom. Let me tell you, those 2 rugs have taken a beating. Yet they still remain fully intact and haven’t matted down from being stepped on over and over.
The durability of these rugs is one of the things that makes my rugs so appealing. This is because of the quality of fibers (yarn, string, cording) I use. The recycled cotton macrame cording I use is tightly woven, making it dense (which makes it a tightly woven rug) and plush to step on. The rug wool is also made up of many strands and has the ability to hold its shape no matter how much you step on it. The only rugs in our home that have had strands pull out were the ones with synthetic yarn.
Another benefit to my rugs is that they’re made to use both sides. Edges are whip stitched to give it a finished look so when one side is dirty, flip it over and get more use before washing.
I can’t answer if rugs are necessary for you, but on my cold tile floor, they are a welcome gift to my feet. By our slider, they are a touch point for traffic going in and out and by my daughter’s window, they offer a place to sit. I bet you can find a place for one too!
